I admit, I'm not familiar with Urban Fantasy. I'm far more accustomed to the "knights in shining armor" style "high" fantasy set in medieval times--or the story's analog to them, and I tend to stay away from big city stuff for more personal reasons.

That being the case, I can officially consider this story my introduction to the genre... this in spite of having bought two other books in the set years ago (The "Bedlam Bard" omnibus and the "Chrome Borne" omnibus, both by a favorite author and both unopened).

As a STORY, it was good.
Outside of my usual experience, so it's hard to say how good. But having a favorite author (Mercedes Lackey of the Valdemar novels) write part of the series helped me to give it a try, even if she didn't write this particular entry.

HOWEVER....
There is one problem that seriously interfered. I'm usually fairly good at ignoring typos and similar errors, provided I'm not reading a story for the purpose of critiquing. But some errors are too hard to ignore; they interfere too much with the experience of the story.
I chose, recently, to assume that the problem could have been a computer glitch. I tried deleting the story from my Kindle and re-downloading it; I tried downloading it to my computer and my tablet. The errors remained.
They are as follows:
1) at least three separate sections in which several paragraphs in a row were completely italicized.
One of these sections looked like a dream sequence, so I could pass that one off as a stylistic choice, but the others looked as though someone had forgotten to turn off italics until the next passage that required it. Given that the beginning and end of these sections should have been italicized (internal thoughts, usually), this further suggests a mistake.
2) Text that might serve a purpose in the "code" of the file, but which is nothing more than garbage characters within the actual story.

Bedlam Boyz Bedlam Bard series Book 3 eBook Ellen Guon Reviews

I LIKE this book! That's why I've read it several times and it stays in my library. And; recommend it to others.
Not my favorite book in this world, but it's a good filler story. This book introduces you to Kayla and Elizabet, who show up in some of the other "Bedlam Bard/Eric Banyon Series" books by Mercedes Lackey. Perhaps it is just because I don't like Ellen Guon's style of writing as well, but I felt that the characters were a little shallow in this book and their stories weren't really developed. However, this book does tell you how Kayla finds out about her powers and how she meets Elizabet.
I've read the other book in this series, and to be honest, skipped over this one because it wasn't written by the other authors. I finally managed to return and while the story was decent, I stayed on the fence about it until about halfway through. I enjoyed the characters in the other book and thought thy could have been written better in this one. Still a good read, just not the greatest.
The story is great. But it's getting to the point that I don't want to bother with because there are so many damn typos! Complete sentences that are put in as gibberish instead of the conversation
I had no idea what this book would be like, the cover definitely threw me and didn't make me want to open it but I was not disappointed. It took a little bit to get into it in beginning but quickly picked up. The story is about teens who have ran away from foster care and are making it on their own, when a robbery happens to change it all. From the moment a armed gunman attacks a convenience store the magic of one girl is called forth to save those who are all she has left and the one who tried to take them from her. The rest of the book is her having to deal with her magic and learning to make decisions about control and not letting others use her. If your up for magic, murder, teen runaway, love, fantasy it's here.
First. I must apologize! I thought I had purchased Book 1. However, I managed to acquire Book. 3. EG had written a novel about a woman who has healing powers She always ties to use those powers for good, but in this novel it appears she attracted unwanted attention from a criminal element who wanted to use her healing powers at an outlandish price. She attempts to separate herself from that element. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
Billy and the two girls he protects, Liane and Kayla, have run away from their foster home and are living in an abandoned office building. It's not a perfect life, but they're getting by. Then a convenience store shooting disrupts the fragile balance of their lives.

Kayla discovers her magic and finds a mentor--a protector who replaces Billy. But, others also discover Kayla's magic. Kayla's magic endangers her and she must learn not only how to survive, but how to avoid victimization.

The story contains both action and emotional appeal. Kayla is realistically drawn, with both pluck and vulnerability. When the story concludes, Kayla is determined to prevail over those who would victimize and exploit her. Not so, Liane. Her life of victimization and exploitation is just beginning. While Kayla's gift is magic, Liane's gift is beauty. Liane doesn't understand that a grim future awaits her. There is an entire story here that remains unexplored. It's a story that begins daily for attractive runaways. Kayla may be able to surmount the obstacles that arise from her magic, but Liane's beauty assures her a life of prostitution and drug abuse. While Kayla's story is a fairy tale, Liane's is an untold story of harsh realities.
